WORD FILMS TO RELEASE “BREAK AWAY” APRIL 23 ON DVD
Word Films announces the April 23 DVD release of faith-based film Break Away produced by Frans Cronjé (“Faith Like Potatoes” and “Journey to Grace”). The inspiring story, based on actual events of the film crew and their friends, was shot on a tight budget and a crew consisting of just seven professional members and 15 students and volunteers. The film chronicles the story of a hard-working husband that loses his job and is forced to use what he has and let God multiply it.
Break Away takes place in South Africa and accounts Francois’ challenge of providing for his family after losing his job. He is forced to use what he has, including an old bicycle. With the help of his “black sheep” brother, a bicycle shop owner and a pro-cyclist, Francois makes some life-changing discoveries about his life, career and faith in God.
The story came to Cronjé when he and two of the other filmmakers were all struggling to finance projects during the recession. “We began dreaming of making a movie without a big budget and relied mainly on our skills, equipment and friends,” he recalls. “We decided to tell the story of a fictional character based on our own experiences with the hopes that we can make a difference in people’s lives. The tagline for the movie says: When it seem like you’ve lost everything, use what you’ve got and let God multiply it. It’s a reference to the gospel account of the five loaves of bread and two fish which Jesus multiplied to feed the crowd of 5,000 people. This tagline became our policy to produce the movie. We used the little we had and trusted God to provide the people and equipment we needed. Each crew member even brought his or her own food to the set instead of hiring caterers.”
The filmmakers received R500,000 ($55,000) from ASG Sports Solutions on condition they feature their products in the film. With the help of volunteers and the sponsorship, they were able to create a film that would normally require close to a $1 million to produce. In order to preserve funds, all three men also took on roles in the film with Cronjé playing the lead character, Francois.
“Totally inspiring. Deeply moving. Gut-wrenching. Gifted story-telling. Hope with handles,” raved Pastor Gareth Stead of His People Christian Church. “These are just some of the words that come to mind as I reflect on an evening well spent watching my ‘movie of the year’ – ‘Break Away.’ It brings a message of hope at exactly the right time.” “ ‘Break Away,’ in one way or another, is everyone’s journey,” adds Bmosaic founder, Dr. Bill Bennot. “Hidden within someone’s season of loss and uncertainty are worlds of provision; and it’s movies like ‘Break Away’ that show us the way.”
